Lucie Ann Starkovich, 89, of Virginia, died peacefully Monday, Jan. 14, 2013 at Diamond Willow Assisted Living Facility in Mountain Iron, Minn.
Lucie was the fourth of five daughters born to John A. and Ernesta (Mariotti) Jenia. She was born on March 12, 1923 in Virginia, Minn.
She was baptized as Louisiana Irene Mildred Jenia. She was named after the State of Louisiana because her Italian father said that the Louisiana landscape reminded him of Italy's countryside. Lucie will be remembered by many for her steadfast moral integrity, sincerity as a friend and generosity.
Having attended Marquette Catholic School, Lucie graduated from Virginia High School in 1941. She received her Associates of Arts degree from Virginia Junior College. She married classmate, John M. Starkovich on Aug. 21, 1948 in Virginia. Together, Lucie and John created Starkovich Distributing Company, Inc., and she managed the financial end of the business and John handled the rest!
In addition to bookkeeping, Lucie was a homemaker and mother to nine children; six boys and three girls. She was an advocate for Catholic education, a member of the Virginia Study Club, Friends of Marquette School, a VRMC Gift Shop volunteer, a Meals on Wheels driver, a Soroptomist International member and never hesitated to help a friend in need. Lucie supported the restoration of the State Theatre, "Laurentian Art Center", where she and her sisters entertained audiences with choreographed dancing in the mid 1930's. She enjoyed playing bridge, was the hostess with the mostest, was born to shop, and was always up for an afternoon with John at Fortune Bay.
Although small in stature, Lucie's influence, strength, and endurance as a mother was monumental. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, will remember her above all for her unconditional love, kindness, light heartedness, and the very best hugs ever.
Lucie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; infant son, Jerome; son Lawrence (Larry) and four sisters, Myrtle Bergquist, Nevada Jenia, Elcie Ekman, and Josie Gannon.
Survivors include three daughters, JoErnesta (Bruce R.) Johnson of Virginia, Luan (Len) Gentilini of Ely Lake, Eveleth, and Pia Starkovich of Virginia; four sons, Paul (Annalisa) Starkovich of Virginia, John (Diane) Starkovich of Douglasville, Georgia, Peter Starkovich of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Michael Starkovich of Virginia; 13 grandch ildren, Jacob (Tyree), Kevin (Julie), Andrew (Nicki), Joseph, and Stephanie Johnson; Angela (Cale) Finseth, Anna and Luke Gentilini; Sarah (Kevin) Steele, John, Paul (Kara), Jim Starkovich, and John M. Starkovich III as well as great grandchildren and cousins.
MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2013 in Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia with Rev. Fr. John O'Donnell as celebrant. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m, with a 9:30 a.m. parish rosary, until the time of the service in the church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Virginia.
Memorials to Marquette Catholic School Tuition Assistance Fund are preferred. Arrangements are with the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.
