Virgil L. Gustafson, 91, former Goodland area resident, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 in Cornerstone Villa, Buhl, Minn.
He was born June 5, 1921 in Mentor, Minn., he was the son of Gustav and Rena (Madsen) Gustafson.
He grew up in Pengilly, was a World War II Army Veteran serving with the Topographical Engineers in the European Theatre, was a member of the Nashwauk Lutheran Church, Nashwauk Lodge 331 A.F. & A.M. for over 50 years, having served as Master, the Aad Temple of Duluth, all Scottish Rite Bodies, the Marinoff – Miskovich V.F.W. Post 8831 of Pengilly, the Nashwauk American Legion Post, and was known as the honorary mayor of Hart Lake. Virgil had been a general foreman in the concentrator for L.T.V. Mining in Calumet. Virgil and Alice J. Potter were married on May 22, 1946 in Nashwauk.
His wife, Alice in 1998; three brothers, Norman, Clayton and Gordon Gustafson; and three sisters, Bernice Fox, Muriel Johnson, and Donna Jean Gross preceded him in death.
Survivors include his children, Marie (Thomas) Varberg of Salinas, Calif., Thomas (Mary) Gustafson of Eau Claire, Wis., Roger (Sarah) Gustafson of Goodland, and Jon (Juleene) Gustafson of Pengilly; six grandchildren; two great granddaughters; and one great grandson.
VISITATION: 11 a.m. until the 12 Noon funeral service on Friday, Dec. 7, 2012 in the Nashwauk Lutheran Church. Interment will be at the Lakeview Cemetery, Coleraine.
