George Edward Head of Duluth, 92, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on Friday, Nov. 23, 2012 at Franciscan Health Center.
George Edward Head of Duluth, 92, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on Friday, Nov. 23, 2012 at Franciscan Health Center.
Born on May 21, 1920 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, George was the second of five children to Gladys and Cyril Head.
He attended college at the University of Manitoba-St. John’s College before serving in the Royal Canadian Artillery from 1939 to 1940. His post-college career also included work at the Dominion Bank Reliance Grain Company and the San Antonio Gold Mines.
On July 21, 1945, George was united in marriage to his sweetheart Marie Larsen in Bissett, Manitoba. The couple moved to the United States in 1951 and spent time in Missouri and Mahnomen, Minn., before settling in Duluth where they resided for over 50 years.
George retired as a land agent from Minnesota Power in December 1981. During his retirement years, George enjoyed traveling, spending time with his grandchildren, sailing on Lake Superior, and riding his motorcycle. He will be fondly remembered as an avid Paul Harvey listener, a fantastic story-teller, and a chess-playing whiz.
He is preceded in death by his infant great-grandson, Jonah Thomas Schwartz; and his siblings Bobby, Billy, Phyllis, and Valerie.
George is survived by his loving wife, Marie; son, Clayton (Joy) Head; daughters, Susan Lewis and Cathy (Grant) Schwartz; 11 grandchildren, Valerie, Brendan, Pixie, Sheryl, Jaime, Mike, Kelly, Jason, Bryan, Laura, Sarah; and 21 great grandchildren.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: will be held at a later date.
