Rose Hren, 91, formerly of Hibbing, passed away on Friday, Nov. 23 at Faith Home Care in Woodbury, Minn., with her family by her side.
She was born in Stevenson, Minn., on Aug. 12, 1921 to the late James and Cecilia Rico.
Rose was raised in Keewatin and graduated from the R. L. Downing High School in 1939. Over the years she was employed at Peter Michelich’s grocery store in Keewatin, the Red Owl in Hibbing, worked for many years as a secretary for Kenneth Peterson at the Hibbing High School, and for a period of time at the Mesaba Clinic.
Rose was devoted to her family and faith. She was known for her baking skills and generously giving away potica, crescent rolls, mock ravioli, Italian dishes, sarmas, tea rings, and of course bundt cakes. She spent time with her husband Tony tending to their back yard garden which yielded green beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, and other vegetables. She enjoyed canning the likes of antipasto, choke cherry jelly, garden vegetables, and venturing out in the woods near the family cabin on Perch Lake to pick blueberries.
She was community minded as an active member of the Blessed Sacrament Church where she attended daily Mass, served in various capacities at the Parish Bazaar, and faithfully recited the rosary every morning while enjoying a cup of coffee.
Rose was a member of the W.C.O. Foresters Branch 610, American Legion Post 222 Women’s Auxiliary, Knights of Columbus Council 1649 Women’s Auxiliary, where she served numerous terms as president, the Hibbing Italian-American Club, the Holy Rosary Circle, and various bridge clubs.
Rose was preceded in death by her husband Tony in December 2005; her parents; sisters Anne Frank, Filomena “Mae” Coggiola, Mary Guerrero, and brothers Paul and Harry Rico.
Survivors include her son Tom (Nicolle) of Cottage Grove, Minn.; granddaughter Anna Rose, and grandsons James Anton and Tony Christopher, special niece Cecile (Dr. Paul) Hennegan of Colorado Springs, Colo., and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
The family deeply appreciates the outstanding care giving performed by Marcia Roberts and her staff at Faith Home Care. She truly gave us Rose to enjoy and cherish, embrace and love, watch her grandchildren grow, and maintain her dignity, over the past five years of declining health.
