LEIF S. CHILMAN

Leif Sawyer Chilman, 25, passed away Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012.

Leif was born Dec. 7, 1986, in Deer River. He was the fourth of four children. Until he was in second grade, Leif lived with his family on a rural homestead of 80 acres north of Deer River and attended King Elementary School. In 1991, Leif’s family moved to a home near Twig. He attended Caribou Lake Elementary School and graduated from Proctor High School in 2005.

Following high school, Leif worked for Innovative Living and Capstone Services as a care attendant and enrolled at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, where he was a member of the inaugural FDLTCC Thunder football team. In 2009, Leif earned his AA degree and a certificate in law enforcement and continued to work at Capstone Services.

Leif loved the outdoors; four-wheeling, hunting, fishing and blazing trails through woods. He always had some engine project underway and was the first to step up and volunteer to help his friends and family fix their vehicles. He had a Chevy project truck he was particularly invested in restoring, with the willing assistance of his two-year old nephew, Jasper. Leif also helped his mom and dad complete a lot of projects around their homes.

Leif is survived by his parents, Greg Chilman and Fleta Carol; brothers Marsh and Birch; sister Ivy; nephew Jasper Chilman; Jasper’s mom, Jennifer Thompson; aunts and uncles, John and Julie Gauster, Mitch and Lori Norman, and Keith and Elaine Aho; cousins Sara Suerth and Ian Norman; grandmother Trudy Aho; and many, many other relatives and good friends whose love and support during this difficult time are much appreciated.

VISITATION: 10:30 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the Cremation Society, 4100 Grand Ave., Duluth. Reception at Mr. D's following the service. Gifts in Leif’s memory can be made to the Rails Endowment for Academic, Art and Athletic Development (REA3D), 131 Ninth Ave., Proctor MN 55810.

My heart goes out to all the Chillman family. Leif was an amazing person and a joy to be around. Always the first to lend a hand. He will be greatly missed by all that had the honor of knowing him.
