Marcia Mary Downs, 68, of Minong, formerly of Superior, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, in Essentia Health - St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.
She was born June 14, 1944, in Superior, daughter of Marshall and Margaret Weire. Marcia received her B.S. in education in 1962 and her master of arts in 1972. Her career as an elementary teacher included Bryant, Cooper and Lake Superior schools in Superior.
Marcia was a member of Upsilon Chapter-Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority and Ladies of the Lake. She was a former member of Calvary Lutheran Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, choir member, Bible school attendee, and secretary. As a charter member of New Hope Lutheran Church, she volunteered as a secretary. Most recently Marcia attended The River Wesleyan Church in Minong.
Some of her hobbies included quilting, scrapbooking, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Marcia is survived by her son, Greg (Jenny) Downs, of Minong; grandchildren Justin, Josh, James and Peyton Downs, all of Minong; her sister, Marilyn (Dr. Glenn) Heestand of Pleasanton, Calif.; nephew Dr. Gregory (Dr. Grace Ku) Heestand of San Diego, Calif.; loving friends the LeRoy and Bessie Johnson family; and her pet Papillon, “Thunder”.
VISITATION: 10 until the 11 a.m. service, Tuesday, Nov. 6, in The River Wesleyan Church, N13205 Rice Lake Road in Minong. Reverend Ben Kidder will officiate.
Following the service, all are invited to a luncheon at the church. A private inurnment will be held at the Gordon Memorial Cemetery in Gordon following the luncheon.
The Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th St., Superior, is assisting the family with arrangements.
