Prudence (Prudy) Lanegran Cameron (78) passed away at home in St. Paul, surrounded by family on Sept. 24, after a lengthy illness.
She was born Sept. 19, 1934 in South St. Paul.
Prudy is a 1952 graduate of South St. Paul High School. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Macalester College in 1956 and her Masters of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison two years later. Prudy then moved to Duluth, to pursue two of her passions – teaching and politics. She met Donald Cameron while listening to a jazz band at the VFW in Two Harbors. During her decades on the North Shore, Prudy taught English and History at Hermantown High School, and served on numerous civic, religious and community boards. Her leadership skills, love of debate and take-charge personality put her in the thick of local politics. She managed campaigns and held prominent positions within the DFL party. Two of her most cherished accomplishments were casting an Electoral Vote on behalf of Minnesota for Al Gore in 2000 and serving as an election judge for many years. Prudy worked at home while raising her children and countless pets. She became known for her baking and sewing talents. Her watermelon pickles, jams and baked goods became anticipated gifts for special occasions. Family members have many of her quilts. Temple Israel in Duluth is home to the quilted banners of the 12 Tribes of Israel that she helped complete in the late 1980s. Prudy loved to read, travel and play board games and cards. She was activist and home body. She took pride in helping shape the lives of young people. Her students, children, nieces and nephews as well as her grandchildren thrived with her compassion and attention.
Prudy was a long-time member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Duluth until illness prompted her move to daughter Rebecca’s home in St. Paul in 2010. Even then she would only depart her beloved city if she could bring her dog. Prudy encouraged her family to sweeten the deal by fulfilling her lifelong wish for a horse. They declined.
She is preceded in death by parents Walter and Lita Lanegran; sisters Patricia Kane and Barbara Cox; brother Peter Lanegran; grandson Ryan Stritzel and husband Donald Cameron.
She is survived by sister Virginia Lanegran, South St. Paul; brother David (Karen) St. Paul; sister-in-law Joan,Forest lake, Minn.; daughters Michille (Leo) Purcell, Friendswood, Texas, Linda (Dennis) Johnson, Eagle River, Alaska, Bonnie (Gary) Stritzel, Windsor, Calif., Rebecca (J. Michael) Gonzalez-Campoy, St. Paul; and son William Cameron, Superior, Wis.; along with eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 in Kandt Tetrick Funeral Home in South St. Paul. Visitation will take place at 12 Noon.
