George Henry Hammond, 89, Cloquet, Minn., was welcomed into the arms of His Savior on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012 at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet.
George was born in Bemidji, Minn., on Nov. 23, 1922, the youngest of 13 children born to Charles and Elizabeth (Boyce) Hammond.
He graduated from Bemidji High School in 1940 and married Jewel Arlene Smith on June 5, 1949. George was quietly proud of his service in the Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict, serving from 1941 to 1951 as a T3-Tech Sergeant. George and Jewel moved to the Hibbing/Chisholm, Minn., area where he was a lifelong electrician and member of the IBEW, working for Kohler Electric, Rhude & Fryberger, and Malton Electric during his long career. They later moved to Cloquet after he took early retirement to help their son Daniel wire his newly-started business facility.
George found faith in Jesus Christ and dedicated his entire life to serving Him. He was a faithful servant, teacher, deacon, elder and unselfish, giving man in local congregations in communities where they lived: First Baptist Church in Chisholm, New Jerusalem Church (now New Life Community Church) in Carlton, and Beth Yeshua Fellowship in Superior, Wis. His passions in life were fishing trips with his four sons, skunking family members in cribbage, pitching slow pitch softball, and giving High Fives and Vitamin C drops to children he greeted.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Jewel; his four sons William (Judy) of Babbit, Minn., Walter (LouAnn) of Detroit Lakes, Minn., Glenn (Linda) of Hibbing, and Daniel (Denise) of Cloquet; 17 grandchildren Christopher and Derrick Hammond, Janaya (Jeff) Davis, Sharese, Lydia and Amber Hammond, Bethany (Jason) Graves, Joel (Amanda) Hammond, Heather (Jed) Frederick, Ryan (Brandi) Hammond, Andrea (Michael) Porta, Leah Hammond, Deborah (Dustin) Hjelle, Hannah, Rebecca, Rachel and Nathan Hammond; and 16 great-grandchildren Taylor, Colton and Parker Davis, Hunter Yeager, Owen, Sylvie and Ariadne Graves, Ezra and Ezekiel Frederick, Brielle Hammond, Judah and Simeon Porta, Allison Hammond and three unborn babies due this year.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his 12 siblings.
VISITATION: 5 until the 7 p.m. funeral service Thursday, Oct. 18, in the New Life Community Church in Carlton. Military honors will be accorded by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard. Burial will be at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis. Arrangements entrusted to Atkins Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet. To sign the guestbook and offer an online tribute see
