Einard A. Saatela, 92, of Mt. died Friday, Oct. 5, 2012 at VRMC – Hospice Unit.

Einard A. Saatela, 92, of Mt. Iron, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2012 at VRMC – Hospice Unit.

Einard was born on Oct. 30, 1919, in Virginia, Minn., the son of Andrew Emil and Linnia Katarina (Ketola) Saatela.

He grew up and attended schools in Orr, graduating from Orr High School in 1937.

Einard enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, and served honorably as a pilot during World War II as a 1st Lt. He flew numerous combat and rescue missions throughout the Asiatic-Pacific and European Theaters. Einard received several awards, including the Air Medal with four oak-leaf clusters.

He was united in marriage to Martha Ilona Lundeen on April 6, 1947 in McGregor, Minn.

After returning from the Service, he was employed for many years as a blaster for Erie Mining Company, and retired in 1981.

Einard was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed gardening, reading, chopping wood, picking blueberries, hunting, fishing, cooking, and spending time with family and friends. Einard was known for his compassion, kindness, great sense of humor and sharp wit. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Einard was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Martha; and two sisters.

He is survived by his children Darlys Erickson, Ham Lake, Minn., Gary Saatela, Zim, Minn., Dennis (Carol) Saatela, Mt. Iron, Minn., and Duane (Dawnette) Saatela, Mt. Iron, Minn.; seven grandchildren Krysten (Joe), Kerry (Shawn), Darren, Damon, Debra (Craig), Russell and Amber; four great-grandchildren Brendan, Megan, Anna, and Morgan; eight siblings Wally (JoeAnn), Clayton (Carolyn), Mel (Suzanne), Leonard (Doreen), Donald, Pearl (Bob), Evelyn (Bill), and Shirley (Gus); special friend Helen Lehman, Greaney, Minn.;, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012 in Trinity Lutheran Church, with a visitation one hour prior to the service, Pastor Brad Felix will officiate. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Virginia Serviceman’s Honor Guard. Memorials are preferred and should be made to East Range Hospice in Einard’s name.
