George A. Eklund, 97, formerly of Rose Road, Duluth, passed away peacefully Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, in Diamond Willow in Cloquet.

George A. Eklund, 97, formerly of Rose Road, Duluth, passed away peacefully Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, in Diamond Willow in Cloquet.
George was born in Duluth Jan. 9, 1915, the youngest of three children born to Swedish immigrants Oscar and Christina (Holmstrom) Berg. George grew up on the Rose Road and received his education at Grant School on the Rose Road. On Oct. 7, 1939, he married Ruth Hermanson and moved to Proctor. He was hired by the D.M.&I.R. Railroad in 1937 and worked on the section, and when he retired from the railroad in 1976, he had advanced to number one engineer in seniority.
His hobbies were hunting, fishing, traveling and fixing anything that broke or didn't work. He was an excellent mechanic. George and Ruth moved back to the Rose Road in 1972 and lived there until the spring of 2011.
He was a member of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, NARVE, the Masons Euclid Lodge 198, Solway Senior Citizens Group and Duluth Area Swede Finn Historical Group.
George was a devoted husband, dad, father-in-law, grandpa, great-grandpa, uncle and friend. He will be missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his father, Oscar Berg; mother Christina Eklund; stepfather Albert
Eklund; brother Carl Eklund; and sister Emma (Jarl) Carlson.
George is survived by his wife, Ruth; son Gary (Sharon) Eklund of Victoria, Minn.; daughter Bonnie (Walt) Novak of Layton, Utah; grandchildren Teri (David) Saxon of Woodland Park, Colo., Kevin Eklund of Carver, Minn., Erich (Heidi) Novak of San Ramon, Calif., and Kirsten (Don) Basile of Salt Lake City, Utah; nine great-grandchildren; nephews Daryl Carlson and Jarl (Cathy) Carlson; and cousins and extended relatives in Sweden and Norway.
VISITATION: 1 until the 2 p.m. funeral service Monday, Oct. 8, in Sunrise Funeral Home, 4798 Miller Trunk Hwy. in Hermantown. Entombment at Sunrise Memorial Park.
