Sandra Shabiash, 67, of Sawyer, passed away in her home with her family by her side Sept. 14, 2012.
She was born June 27, 1945, to Vernon and Florence (Aitken) Eno in Bayfield County, Wis.
Sandra served as the elected Sawyer District Representative on the Fond du Lac Reservation Business Committee from December 2006 until her death. She represented Fond du Lac on the Education and Human Services subcommittee of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. Sandra had a long and successful career in the education field serving as the Director of Indian Education for the Carlton School District from 1972 until 2007. She had a passion for the education of Native American students and helped the Carlton School District maintain graduation rates for Native American learners that was unprecedented.
She had been the recipient of numerous awards for her contributions to Indian Education including recognition from the Minnesota Indian Education Association with the Human Relations Award, which was the first time this award was given to a person that was not an active teacher. Sandra had a Minnesota Teaching License in Indian Language and Culture, a BAS in Psychology from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and a degree in accounting from the Duluth Business University. She was committed to her career in public service on behalf of the people of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Vincent “Ben” Shabiash; daughters Barbra Jean Shabiash and Stacy Pellerin; brothers Marvin and Alvin Eno; and her sister, Lavern Cartwright.
She is survived by her children, Brenda Shabiash, Ben (Kim) Shabiash, and Laurie Pellerin; grandchildren Brody and Vincent Mullen and Shanita Luing; and her sister, Shirley (Robert) Barney. The family is especially grateful to her two nieces, Roberta Morrison, who put her life on hold for the last year and a half to provide care and companionship to Sandra, and Jeanette Loud who also came to help in the care and supportiveness of her aunt, sister and family members.
No memorial service will be held.
