Arnold V. Gustafson "Uncle Arnie", 82, Duluth, died Sept. 8, 2012 at home with family.

Arnold V. Gustafson "Uncle Arnie", 82, Duluth, died Sept. 8, 2012 at home with family.

He was born in Puposky, which is near Bemidji, Minn., on Nov. 21, 1929 to Adolph and Violet Gustafson.

Arnie was a 1948 graduate of Bemidji High School and moved to Duluth in 1955. He had worked as a sheet metal mechanic for A.W. Kuettel until an accident at age 35. In recent years he enjoyed giving back to his community by being a philanthropic columnist, Ask Uncle Arnie and Aunt M. He loved reading, crossword puzzles and Jeopardy. In his early years, Arnie had been an avid outdoorsman and had served in the Merchant Marine.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Charles "Vern", Gordon and his wife Mary, Stanley "Doc" and his wife Deloris and brother-in-law Paul Gunderson.

Arnie is survived by his very special grandnieces, Melissa Swor, Duluth, and her children Michael and Mariah, who are also Arnie's Godchildren, and Jessica Gerry, Bloomington, Minn.; siblings Arlene (Leroy) Oelrich, Strawberry, Ariz., Robert (Melva) Gustafson, Chisago City, Minn., Lorna Gunderson, Yuma Ariz., Lyal (Gayle) Gustafson, Madison, Wis., Lorraine (Donald) Merritt, Duluth, Ardell (Robert) Green, Ramsey, Minn., and many beloved nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grand nephews and several great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

A special thank you to his friend Shona Phipps and Arnie's family at Viewcrest, Dr. Huska and Dr. Rishavy, St. Luke's 5 West ICU and Hospice Staff and Interim Health Care.

VISITATION: 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. Funeral service Friday in Williams-Lobermeier-Boettcher Funeral Home. Burial at Oneota Cemetery. Memorials to Union Gospel Mission or the Salvation Army are preferred.
