ALAN GARNEY POTVIENAlan "Al" Garney Potvien, "Just call me Al", 57, of Salt Lake City, Utah, peacefully passed away on Sept. 2, 2012. He was surrounded by family and friends as his courageous battle with leukemia came to an end.
Alan "Al" Garney Potvien, "Just call me Al", 57, of Salt Lake City, Utah, peacefully passed away on Sept. 2, 2012. He was surrounded by family and friends as his courageous battle with leukemia came to an end.
He was born on Aug. 25, 1955 in Duluth.
In 1980 he married the love of his life, Linda Boardwell, and they moved to Utah to begin their life together.
He enjoyed a long career working for the Utah State Liquor Commission. His love for the outdoors and traveling was something he cherished. Most important was his passion for hockey. He enjoyed playing, coaching, and watching his sons play hockey. His sense of humor and loving touch will always be remembered.
Al is survived by his loving wife, Linda, and his beautiful children, Tessa Lin, Marc Alan Garney, and Jay William. He is also survived by his mother Helen, in Duluth, along with siblings Monica, Gerard (Mary), Renee (Scott), Anita (Fred), Tim, Tom, and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Al is preceded in death by his father, Garney, "The Great Fellow."
VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, in the Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1385 East Spring Lane (approx. 4800 South), where Al and his family have attended mass for 25 years.
The family thanks all caregivers who helped Al keep fighting. It was a long and difficult battle, but now Al is at peace.
