Jerry Edwin Metcalf passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 14, 2012 in Springfield, Missouri.
He was born on July 5, 1947 to Evelina and Edwin Metcalf. Raised on a farm in Crane, Mo.
He enlisted in the Air Force shortly after graduation from Crane High School in 1965, along with his friends Gary Webb, Larry Johnson, and Ronnie Stevens. The Air Force brought Jerry to Duluth, where he worked at Northwestern Bell/Qwest for over 37 years until his retirement in 2007. His distinguished Military service spanned 27 years until he retired from the Minnesota Air National Guard in 1992.
After retirement, he spent his time enjoying his hobbies which included his love for car racing with Roger MacGillvary, hunting and fishing, canning, making good wine, spoiling his grandchildren, and golfing. He celebrated his first hole in one at Lester Park Golf Course this past July. He was the ultimate craftsman, and always had a number of family inspired projects to keep him busy.
Jerry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He lived life to the fullest and always on his own terms. He was always available and willing to lend a hand or offer advice when he was asked or needed. He was loved immensely and will be greatly missed by all. Although he has taken his final lap on earth, his memory will live on forever in the hearts of those that he loved.
Jerry was preceded in death by his father Edwin and daughter Leslie.
Jerry is survived by his mother, Evelina Metcalf, and his sister, Judy (Kenny) Robertson, and their families residing in Missouri; his loving wife of 21 years, Terri Newman, and her daughters, Michelle (Nick) Newman Pladson of Minneapolis and Gina Newman of Minneapolis; Karen Metcalf of Duluth, the mother of his children, Dan (Cheryl) Metcalf of Hermantown, Randy Metcalf of Duluth, Nicole Metcalf of Thompson, and Brian Metcalf of Duluth; and five grandchildren, Kailey, Austin, Shawna, Ashleigh, and Eli Metcalf.
VISITATION: 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. memorial service Tuesday, Aug. 21, in the Cremation Society of MN, 4100 Grand Ave. Duluth. Inurnment at Oneota Cemetery, immediately after the service, with Military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Honor Guard.
