Lowell J. Oseland, 84, of rural Duluth, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012 at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
He was born May 21, 1928 to Luther and Mildred (Cashman) Oseland in Superior, Wis.
He was united in marriage to Joyce Wise on Dec. 3, 1949 in Duluth, and together they raised five children. Following their marriage, they lived in Duluth, California and Biwabik prior to making their home in Palo, Minn. He dearly loved his wife of 54 years and after Joyce's passing in 2003, he was united in marriage to Deloris Thompson on June 25, 2006. He felt fortunate to find another love in his life with Deloris and loved her dearly.
Starting at the age of 14, Lowell started working on the railroad-at 16 years of age he was a cook on the Great Lakes in the Merchant Marine. He also worked at a radiator plant in California. As Lowell moved his family to the Iron Range, he began working at Erie Mining Company as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the Local 49 International Union of Operating Engineers.
Lowell also owned and operated his own logging company "Lowell Oseland and Sons". And then finally retiring from White Township to become a farmer and making hay. He loved all makes and models of farm tractors. He was a big man with a big heart full of unconditional love for everyone that he knew. He loved the Lord and accepted Christ as his personal Savior. He loved his special companion, his border collie Spot. He loved to work with his hands and with his tools. Anyone that came to his home felt welcome and never left hungry. Lowell will be sadly missed by all of his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Joyce and his sisters JoAnn Wood and Elizabeth Shain.
Survivors include his wife of six years, Deloris; children, Micheal (Patty) of Santa Maria, Calif., Grant (Marilyn) of Palo, Minn., Donald (Brenda) of Stillwater, Minn., Curtis (Angela) of Crystal, Minn., Karen (Jason Monsrud) Oseland of Eveleth, Minn., Crystal Spry of Grand Marais, Minn., Gail (Jody) Cooke of Duluth, Michelle Lovaas of Eveleth, Minn.; grandchildren Michael, Jennifer, Cory, Brianna, Lauren, Grace, Lee, Carlos, Adrian, Andrea, Gage, Austin, Ryan, Randy, Jason, Eric; great-granddaughters, Savannah and Aleeya; siblings Mary Lou (Ray) Mularie, Thomas (Lillian) Oseland, Judy (Bud) Tadman, Patty Little; sisters-in-law Norma (William) Bell and Geraldine Asher. Also many numerous nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, with a time of sharing at 6:30 p.m. in the Range Funeral Home in Virginia and will continue on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 1 p.m. to the 2 p.m. Memorial Service in Peace United Church of Christ in Duluth.
