Richard L. Musolf, 88, of Duluth, passed away on Friday, Aug. 3, 2012 at Diamond Willow in Proctor, Minnesota surrounded by his family, pastor, and friends.
Richard L. Musolf, 88, of Duluth, passed away on Friday, Aug. 3, 2012 at Diamond Willow in Proctor, Minnesota surrounded by his family, pastor, and friends.
Richard Louis Musolf was born Feb. 8, 1924 in Duluth, Minnesota, the son of Michael and Stella (Mosiniak) Musolf.
He grew up in the west end of Duluth and graduated from Denfeld High School. He joined the Merchant Marines in 1943 and was involved in the Battle of Normandy. He later joined the U.S. Navy and attended Purdue University and served in the Pacific. He returned to Duluth and married Betty Mae Sternal. He later married Pearl Cooke. He was the Electrical Inspector for the City of Duluth for 25 years. He also taught electrician apprentices at night school at Duluth Area Institute of Technology.
He enjoyed doing mechanical repair and was a "child prodigy" at it. At age 10, he would repair clocks and watches, and had his own bicycle repair business. He built his own bicycle from spare parts. He continued to share his time and talents throughout his life.
He was a charter member and long-time trustee of St. John's Free Lutheran Church. He was also a member of Gideons International, acitive in the Boy Scouts, and the Duluth Heights Community Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Betty Mae and Pearl; son Roger; daughter, Betty; step-son, Randy Cooke; brothers and sisters, Pearl Myshack, Irene Conant, Floyd Musolf, Henry Musolf, Jean Musolf, and Michael Musolf.
He is survived by his children, Steven (Linda) Musolf and Barbara Musolf both of Eden Prairie, Minn.; step-children, Chester (Elna Mae) Cooke of Barnum, Kathy (Bill) Henefelt of Clearwater, Fla., and Julie Cooke of Duluth; grandchildren, Seth Cooke, Erin Cooke, Jessica (Corey) Janssen, and Nicole (Darin) Williams; sister, Olive Kirkland of Hermantown; and brother, Charles Musolf of Longview, Wash.; nieces and nephews, and many, many friends.
VISTIATION: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, 2012 and from 1 p.m. to the 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012 in St. John's Free Lutheran Church, 3601 West Arrowhead Road , Duluth. Funeral Services will follow at 2 p.m. Military Honors by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. Burial at Calvary Cemetery, Duluth. Memorials preferred to St. John's Free Lutheran Church, Roger Musolf Scholarship Fund, c/o Steven Musolf, 14389 Bedford Drive, Eden Prairie, MN 55346 or the Salvation Army.
