CARLTON A. HOLMES

Carlton A. Holmes 94, of Montello, Wis. passed away on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at Divine Savior Hospital in Portage.

Carlton A. Holmes 94, of Montello, Wis., passed away on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at Divine Savior Hospital in Portage. He was a resident of Divine Savior Tivoli Rehabilitation Center.

Carlton was born on July 16, 1918 in Gypsum, Ohio the son of Erhard and Signe (Carlsson) Holmes.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II from February of 1941 through February 1946. Carlton was discharged as an ordinance captain in the European Theater.

After his military service, he entered the University of Minnesota and ultimately obtained his bachelor's of science degree in wood technology in 1948. Carlton worked at Halvorson Trees as a wood technologist in Duluth, from 1948 to 1965. He was then employed by the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wis., as a research wood technologist, retiring in July of 1980.

In December of 1941 he married Inez H. Sonquist in Dayton, Iowa with whom he had four children. Inez passed away in March of 1959. Carlton married Alice E. Axelson in December of 1969 in Welch, Minn. Alice had been a missionary in Bihar, India until that time. Carlton and Alice joined the Peace Corps in 1981 through 1984 serving in Ecuador, South America. They enjoyed their retirement in Wisconsin on their beautiful farm outside of Cross Plains, moving to Montello, in 1995. Alice passed away in December of 2007. Carlton was also a ham radio operator and was a member of the Gideon and prison ministries.

Carlton was also preceded death by his parents; sister, Helen; nephew, Steven; daughter-in-law, Kathy.

Mr. Holmes is survived by three sons, Robert Holmes of Duluth, Lawrence Holmes of Fort Wayne, Ind., Thomas (Jan) Holmes of Pine River, Wis.; his daughter, Signe (Joseph) Perrigoue of Wyocena, Wis.; three grandchildren, a great grandchild, a nephew, two nieces, other relatives and friends

The family would like to thank Assisted Care and Tivoli Rehabilitation staff for the excellent care of our father over the past year.

SERVICE: 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, 2012 with visitation starting at 9 a.m., in Calvary Lutheran Church, 202 S. Farmer St. Princeton, Wis., with Rev. Robert Busse officiating. Full Military honors will follow the service at the church. Burial will take place on Saturday, Aug. 4, at 1 p.m., at Park Hill Cemetery, 2500 Vermilion Rd. in Duluth.
