Carol Ilene Grabow, age 84, of Hermantown died at Edgewood VISTA on Monday, July 16, 2012.
She and her twin brother were born to Jess and Ethel Vague on December 13, 1927 in Concordia Kansas. Carol, along with her three siblings, spent her childhood in Kansas, graduating from Norton Community High School in 1945. She continued her education at Hays State University, Kansas where she majored in music education and worked as secretary to the head of the music department. She also attended the School of Music at Wichita University.
In February, 1950, she married William Grabow in Leoti, Kansas. They began married life in Kansas and Bill's work took them to several states including Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Colorado, ultimately returning to Minnesota in Silver Bay. Here they settled in 1959 and continued to raise their family until retirement.
Carol taught piano and did some substitute teaching. She was active in PTA, and the United Protestant Church where she also served as choir director for many years. She had a beautiful voice and often sang solos or duets at church. She was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for at least 10 years.
She enjoyed genealogy, traveling, music, sewing, dancing and poetry. Maintaining connections with family and friends was very important to her resulting in much automobile travel with stops at all the museums and historical markers along the way.
Carol always loved the southwest so was particularly happy to spend about 15 years in Arizona following Bill's retirement.
Her presence will truly be missed.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband William Grabow; her parents; twin brother Cleo; and older sister Nadine.
She is survived by her sister Edith (Guido) Smith of Wyoming; three daughters, Vicki (Michael) Skubic, of Virginia, Minn, Jan (Rex) Lillis, of Silver Bay, Minn, Nancy (David) Gustafson, of Tofte, Minn; one son Michael (Linda) Grabow, of Coon Rapids, Minn; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.
Carol will be put to rest at a private family service.
Carol's family would like to thank the caregivers at Edgewood VISTA for their patient compassionate care and St. Mary's Hospice for providing guidance and comfort.
