Donald Hergert, 84, of Duluth, passed away Friday, July 20, 2012, in the Veterans Home in Silver Bay.

Donald Hergert, 84, of Duluth, passed away Friday, July 20, 2012, in the Veterans Home in Silver Bay.

He was born Aug. 19, 1927, on the family farm near Alexander, Kan., to David and Mary Catherine Hergert. On Feb. 14, 1954, Donald married Marilyn Binford, what a romantic!

He received his master's in cello from Indiana University.

Donald was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in Texas during the Korean War era. He taught music at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan., and later taught orchestra in Duluth at West Junior and Ordean. Donald also played cello with the Duluth Symphony. He repaired string instruments and composed music.

Donald was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

He was preceded in death by his son, David, in 2000; his parents; and his sister, Irene Jewitt.

Donald is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marilyn; children Tanja Gustafson, Kristin (Jeff Galbraith) Hergert and Dolf (Polla) Hergert; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his brother, Forrest (Ann) Hergert; and many other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church in lieu of flowers.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: 11 a.m. Thursday, July 26, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
