James A. McDougall, 89, Duluth, passed away peacefully to eternal life on Monday, July 16, 2012, at the Viewcrest Health Center in Duluth surrounded by family.

He was born Aug. 15, 1922, in Chisholm, Minnesota, the first born child of Russell and Beatrice (Whipps) McDougall.

He attended Hibbing Junior College and served his country in World War II as an air traffic controller. On Oct. 20, 1962, he married his wife of nearly 50 years, Irene A. Bussa, in Minneapolis. He held many positions which celebrated his love of people, speaking, writing, and sales. He was a radio announcer for WMFG in Hibbing and WKLK in Cloquet and was an insurance sales agent for Prudential and the American Automobile Association, retiring from the AAA in 1984 after nearly 20 years of service.

After his retirement, Jim gave of his time to the Duluth Depot, Lighthouse for the Blind, 55 Alive, and Kiwanis, and chose to work part-time at the Environmental Protection Agency SEE Program, Senior Reporter, and selling radio advertising. He also had his own business Drive-Alogue, in which he wrote, created, and sold his own Northern Minnesota automobile tour programs.

He had a love of nature, reading, carpentry, snowmobiling, model railroading, boating, waterskiing, traveling, music, fishing, and volunteering. He especially loved spending time at the cabin at Side Lake, Minn. He was a faithful servant to the Lord -- always honest, giving, sharing, reaching out to those less fortunate, and offering his time to multiple humanitarian efforts. It was his faithfulness, willingness to serve, willingness to share his spiritual gifts and talents with others, and great sense of humor that made him who he was.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In addition to his wife, Irene, James is survived by his six children Jamie (Pieter Bekker) McDougall, Hibbing, Kent (Denise) McDougall, Hermantown, Scott (Karin) McDougall, Faribault, and Beth Ann (Brian) Teskey, Timothy (Christine) McDougall, and William McDougall, all of Duluth; one sister, Donna Sherman, Hibbing; and one brother, Kenneth (Margaret) McDougall, Moline, Ill.; 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 10:30 a.m. until the 11:30 a.m. service on Saturday, July 21, in Sunrise Memorial Park Funeral Home in Duluth with the Reverend Jack Harris officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Duluth combined honor guard please. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Duluth Depot.
