Delmer "Del" "Buddy" Walz, 69, of Virginia, Minn. passed away on Monday Jan. 9, 2012, in St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.
Delmer "Del" "Buddy" Walz, 69, of Virginia, Minn., passed away on Monday Jan. 9, 2012, in St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.
Del was born in Fosston, Minn., to Bernard and Magdalena Walz on Jan. 18, 1942.
He grew up in Mahnomen, Minn., and graduated from Mahnomen High School in 1960. Following high school he joined the United States Marine Corps and served from 1960-1963. He married Diane Schooler on July 12, 1965 in Detroit Lakes, Minn. In 1976 Del and Diane were blessed with the arrival of their daughter Lisa.
Del worked in law enforcement from 1974 until 2001. He worked as a Police Officer in Babbitt, Minn., as a St. Louis County Jail Sergeant in Duluth, and in Virginia and Hibbing, Minn. After retiring, he worked at Organic Gold Black Dirt, in Virginia, Minn.
He was a very kind and loving person and was known to lend a helping hand, strike up a conversation with anyone -including strangers, and treat people with respect and fairness. Del never lost his sense of humor, his dedication to his family and friends, or his love of life.
Del was preceded in death by his parents, Magdalena and Bernard Walz; and in-laws Dorothy and Harley Schooler.
Del is survived by his wife of 46 years, Diane of Virginia; daughter Lisa (David) Mattke of Duluth; sister Lorena Teuber of Detroit Lakes; his faithful companion Chester; his grand-kitty's Kitters and Maynard and many extended family and friends.
VISITATION: 1 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2012 until the 2 p.m. memorial service in the Minnesota Cremation Society on Grand Avenue, in Duluth. Cookies, cake and coffee will be served.

Diane and Family, I am sorry to have just learned of Del's passing in January. I enjoyed the years he and I worked together at the Jail. He was a kind man with a great sense of humor and a valued co-worker. I am glad I shared part of his life. Al FarmerDuluth, MN 07/15/2012 1:54 PM
