Kenneth Edward Latterell, MD, 98, of Boca Raton, Fla., and formerly of Duluth, passed away Monday, July 9, 2012 at his residence.
Ken was born in Foley, Minn., on Aug. 18, 1913 to Myrtle Edna (Campbell) and Frank Edward Latterell.
He graduated from Wayne Medical College in Detroit, Mich., in 1941. In 1947 Ken completed his residency in anesthesia at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He was Chief of Anesthesiology at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth, from 1949 to 1973, and Chief of Staff, 1973. He retired in 1980, and moved to Highland Beach, Fla., with his wonderful wife, Kim, where they lived until her sad passing in 1992. He remarried in 1993 and moved to Boca Raton with his second wife Elizabeth, who passed away in 2010. Ken was a caring husband and father. He was generous to many people in many ways.
Ken was known to Duluthians as an excellent physician and he was instrumental in making St. Mary's Medical Center into an excellent regional hospital. He was a pioneer in his specialty, educated many nurse anesthetists, and from the beginning of his career, was a good steward of medical resources. He frequently donated his skills when a patient was unable to pay.
Ken enjoyed listening to music, reading, curling, skiing, fishing, and "putzing" around the house and cabins in Solon Springs, Wis., where the family spent many warm and happy summers.
Ken was quick to forgive, and not one to speak poorly of others. He was a fine and understated man with a good sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Edward and Myrtle Edna; wife Kimberley; second wife Elizabeth; son Michael Francis (Edina, Minn.); sisters Lorna Faust (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Laverne Mandell (Detroit, Mch). He is survived by children Linda Bruen of Eden Prairie, Minn., Larry (Linda) of Stillwater, Minn., Kathy (John) Dolan of Casper, Wyo., Marcie Powell of Stillwater, Minn., Ken (Beverly) of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Kim of Duluth; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 16, until the 12:30 p.m. funeral service in Dougherty Funeral Home. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. If so desired, memorials may be directed to the donor's choice. Condolences for the family may be left at Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St., Duluth, MN. 55805.
