William "Bill" Bernard Buhrmann, 82, died peacefully Sunday, June 17, 2012 with his loving family by his side, at Solvay Hospice House.
William "Bill" Bernard Buhrmann, 82, died peacefully Sunday, June 17, 2012 with his loving family by his side, at Solvay Hospice House.
William was born April 12, 1930 in Pittsburgh, PA, the only child of Wilhelm and Annie Buhrmann. Bill was a 1952 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Mechanical Engineering Degree. On January 29, 1953, Bill married Lurene Schaupp.
His career began with U.S. Steel at Homestead Steel Works, Pittsburgh, in 1952. Bill advanced through many positions with U.S. Steel, leading to Duluth as the General Manager of Operations of Lake Shipping in 1973. In 1993, after 41 years of service, Bill retired as President of U.S. Steel Great Lakes Fleet, Inc.
Bill was a member and Chairman of the Miller Dwan Hospital Board. He was also a member of the Miller Dwan Foundation, Past President of the Kitchi Gammi Club Board and a board member of the Kitchi Gammi Foundation. Bill was a member of Northland Country Club and Pilgrim Congregational Church.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Lurene; son, Dr. Scott (Barb) and their children, Jill and Andrew, of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter, Lynn (Howard) Krenzen, and their children, Louis and Lyndsey, of Duluth; and daughter, Jane (Timothy) Vlach and their children Britney and Harrison, of Colorado Springs, CO.
The family would like to thank Dr. David Sproat, the staff of St. Luke's Hospital and the nursing staff of Solvay Hospice House for the loving care given to Bill and the family.
Memorials are preferred to Solvay Hospice House, the Miller Dwan Foundation, St. Luke's Foundation or a charity of the donor's choice.
A PRIVATE FAMILY SERVICE: will be held. Arrangements entrusted to Cremation Society of Minnesota.
