Willys George Johnson, of St. Augustine, Fla. and Iron River, Wis. died at his home in St. Augustine on June 16, 2012.

Bill was born on April 2, 1929 in Aitkin, Minn.

He earned his Bachelor of Science from Bemidji State College and his Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Illinois.

Bill began his career as a high school teacher, football and track coach and principal. The majority of his professional life was spent in higher education in Illinois and Minnesota. He was instrumental in the early development and administration of community colleges in Minnesota, specifically Centennial, Anoka-Ramsey and Inver Hills.

An avid fisherman, golfer, reader and woodcarver, Bill fully enjoyed his life and the people in it. He will be deeply missed by all of us.

Bill is survived by his wife, Mary Bowman Johnson, of St. Augustine and Iron River; his four children, Patricia Chavez (Jaime) of Morelia, Mexico, Mark Johnson of St. Paul, Dana Johnson of Anoka and Wendy Johnson of Minneapolis; his sister, Barbara Shortridge (James) of Akeley, Minn.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many other family and friends.

SERVICES: A memorial gathering will be held in Wisconsin in the Fall.
