William "Bill" E. Abernethy, 90, died June 13, 2012 at Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Nov. 24, 1921 in Duluth to Thomas and Mary (Binane) Abernethy.
Bill worked in the shipyards until he entered the Army in 1943. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre until his honorable discharge in 1945.
After working 35 years for Northern Pacific/Burlington Northern Railroad, Bill retired in December 1982 as a switchman/foreman.
He enjoyed spending time at the cabin with his family, watching ore boats on Lake Superior and working in his garage.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Thomas, James, and Charles, and his sister Mary "Peggy" Nelson.
Bill is survived by his wife of 68 years, Catherine; sons William (Joan), Larry (Suzette); daughter Colleen; grandchildren Jinell Abernethy, Todd (Stephanie) Abernethy, Amy (Jeffrey) Marolt, Carie (William) Kenney, Craig (Teresa) Abernethy and Alex Abernethy; and 11 great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at both Chris Jensen and Nurses That Care for their dedicated service as well as Dr. Steven Long.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 11 a.m. Monday June 18, 2012 with a visitation at 10 a.m. in the Cremation Society of Minnesota Duluth, 4100 Grand Ave, 624-5200.
