Sam Fedo, 96, of Plymouth, Minn., previously of Duluth, died Thursday, June 14, 2012, in North Memorial Hospital in Robinsdale, Minn.

Sam was born in Duluth Oct. 18, 1915, to Joseph and Vincenza Fedo. He was one of nine children. Sam graduated from Duluth Denfeld in 1936. He served as Staff Sergeant during World War II at a number of state side bases. His duties included training the first Women's Army Corp (WAC) for the U.S. Army and playing in the Army Band. He began a 42-year career with the Duluth Water and Gas Department soon after graduation and was promoted eventually to Gas Division Manager. He retired in 1977.

He was very active in a number of community groups over the years including: founding member and past president of the Duluth Retrievers Club; Knights of Columbus; past president of the Key Club Kiwanis; past president of the Italian American Club; 125th Field Artillery Veterans Group; and past council president of St. Benedict's Catholic Church. In addition, Sam volunteered many years for St. Scholastica Abbey.

Sam was an avid gardener and hunter, enjoying many hunting trips with his friends throughout the Midwest and Canada.

Sam married Eileen Sarff June 18, 1942, and they spent 70 happy years together and with their four children and four grandchildren. Sam was known for his sense of humor and cheerfulness. Before and after retirement, Sam and Eileen enjoyed many trips throughout the United States and elsewhere and loved to visit with friends and family wherever they might be. The highlight of their travels was a trip to Italy where they were able to visit the birthplace of Sam's parents. Sam and Eileen enjoyed spending time with their family, including their grandchildren. They moved to Plymouth from Duluth in 2004 to be closer to their children.

He was preceded in death by his son, Rodney (Susan); four sisters; and two brothers.

Sam is survived by his wife, Eileen; son Gary (Jill) of Big Lake, Minn.; daughters Kay (Gary) Rasmusson of Plymouth, Minn., and Susan (Todd) Rosvold of Rushford, Minn.; grandchildren Sam (Nikki) Fedo of North Branch, Minn., Lee (Amanda) Rosvold of Grand Forks, N.D., Brett Rosvold of Holly Ridge, N.C., and Alaina Rosvold of Milwaukee, Wis.

VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, in Sunrise Funeral Home and 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Wednesday, June 20, in St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Duluth. Military Honors will be Accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Memorials to the Northwood's Children's Services of Duluth or the Alzheimer's Foundation.
