Benhard Arthur Larson, 90, passed away at home March 11, 2012, in Rotonda West, Fla.
Ben was born March 27, 1921, in Jackson, Minn., to Mary and Martin Larson.
He married Dorothy Gustafson of Duluth in 1945. Ben and Dorothy's wonderful marriage ended too soon when Dorothy died in 1975 at age 51. After Ben retired, he and his good friend, Barbara Cash, spent many wonderful years together traveling and enjoying life.
Ben was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Hermantown, Minn., for many years. He worked for DM&IR railroad, retiring in the early 80’s. He finished his railroad career as a skilled crane operator. In retirement, Ben split his time between Gordon, Wis., and Englewood, Fla. Children and grandchildren have cherished memories of visiting these special places over the years.
Ben loved his family and church. He was an avid fisherman in his younger years and loved to take his family camping. Ben has shown us how to live a gentle and fulfilling life. He was the best father four daughters could ever have.
Ben was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents; one brother, Jack Larson; and two sisters, Laura Jean Rasmussen and Dorothy Olsen.
Ben is survived by his four daughters, Linda (Joe) Ranniker Wertelka of Rotonda West, Fla., Debbie (Ed) Gilchrist of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Kathy (Andy) Thielen of Duluth and Sharon Larson of Duluth; grandchildren Brent (Gaew) Ranniker, Matt (Holly) Jampsa, Jolissa Jampsa, Samuel Thielen, Justin Hultquist, Julie Hultquist and Colton Maddy; great-grandchildren Aubrey Jampsa, Julia Jampsa, and Odin Hultquist; sisters Ruth Hansen and Irene (Marshall) Nielsen; and his brother, Gordon Larson.
Ben touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity and maintained his trademark sense of humor throughout his life.
GATHERING OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Saturday, March 24, in Grace Lutheran Church in Hermantown.
Memorial contributions may be made in Ben's name to Grace Lutheran Church's Christian Youth Program.
