Kenneth Edwin Newman, 74, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March 11, 2012 in Emergency at St. Luke's Hospital.
Ken was born in Duluth, on April 10, 1937 to Edwin and Dorothy (Munson) Newman.
In 1961, he married his beautiful bride, Judith Anne Gentry. He graduated from Denfeld High School in 1955 and then from the University of Minnesota School of Pharmacy in 1963. After completing his degree, Ken returned to Duluth that same year, partnered with brother-in-law, Marcus Frederickson continuing the family legacy; Newman Rexall Pharmacy.
Ken served as past presidents of Duluth Associated Pharmacists, the Duluth Retriever Club and was involved in numerous community service organizations. To honor his work in the community, Ken was awarded the Good Neighbor Award in 2011 by the Harrison Community Center. He was an active Rotary Club #25 member for 20 years where he led the Rotary rose sale committee as well as community youth and service volunteer groups. Of his many interests, Ken loved being outdoors sharing time with friends and family. No matter the season, he found wonder and joy in his surroundings. His welcoming smile, uncanny sense of humor, his support and generosity will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Dorothy Newman; his brother-in-law Marcus Frederickson; and his mother-in-law, Pauline Gentry.
He is survived by his loving wife Judy of 50 years; daughters, Kim Newman (Steve Claveau), Kelly Newman Deemer (David); his granddaughter, the apple of his eye, Ginka Tarnowski; his sister, Kay Frederickson and extended family Martha Mary Williams. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.
VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. Thursday, March 15, 2012 in Holy Family Catholic Church, 2430 West 3rd St. and will continue from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service Friday in Holy Family Catholic Church. Memorials to the Denfeld Class of 55 Legacy Fund and Rotary Club #25. Arrangements by Williams Lobermeier Boettcher Funeral Home.
