Michael DeCheff, Jr., 81, of Kansas City, Mo., died at his home, Feb. 11, 2012.

Michael DeCheff, Jr., 81, of Kansas City, Mo., died at his home, Feb. 11, 2012.

Mike was born in Duluth, on Jan. 23, 1931 and grew up there until enlisting in the Air Force of the U.S. September 1949. While stationed at Scott Air Force Base, Belleville, Ill., he met his wife of 60 years, Jean Lee (Podesva) DeCheff.

While in the armed forces he served during the Korean War. He was a life member of the VFW Post 7356 of Parkville, Mo. A 37 year career as an engineer began in St. Louis with SW Bell and continued till a retirement from AT&T in Kansas City in 1989. Mike, WØNS was a lifetime amateur radio operator. He achieved the award of DXCC Honor Roll.

Mike and Jean began their family with the first daughter born in St. Louis, Mo., and the second born in Belleville, Ill. Their family grew with two sons-in-law and three grandchildren while residing the past 43 years in their present home in Platte County. Retirement enjoyments included pride in their family, companionship of his dog and feeding a variety of bird species.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Evelyn DeCheff.

He is survived by his wife, Jean L. DeCheff; daughters, Susan (DeCheff) Anderson and husband, Richard Anderson of Platte City, Mo., Sharon (DeCheff) VanCleave and Jack VanCleave of Weatherby Lake, Mo.; and three grandchildren, Crystal (Anderson) Powell and husband Matthew Powell, Kansas City, Brittany Anderson, Kansas City and Michael Anderson, University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo.

VISITATION: 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at Mount Moriah Terrace Park, 801 NW 108th St., Kansas City, MO 64155.
