Susan Mae Shimmin, 85, of Cloquet, passed away Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012 at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul.
Susan Mae Shimmin, 85, of Cloquet, passed away Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012 at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul.
She was born the fourth of 13 children to Ernestine and Louis Lutes near Sidney, Neb., on May 10, 1926.
She graduated from high school in Stapleton, Neb., in 1943 and from Bryon Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Lincoln in 1947. Susan worked as an RN in Lincoln, Duluth and Cloquet, retiring in 1982. For most of her occupational life, she worked in the labor and delivery section of the hospital. She was later a member of the Hospital Auxiliary.
Susan married Alfred E. Shimmin on Jan. 5, 1946. To this union four children were born. She was an active member of Lakeview Covenant Church in Duluth and Bethany/Pine Valley Covenant Church in Cloquet. Susan served as a Sunday school teacher for 25 years as well as serving on the church board frequently.
Susan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Al in 1990; her parents in 1993; one sister, Flora Connell; and three younger brothers Stephen, Martin and Nathan.
She is survived by her four children, daughters Dr. and Rev. Carol (Craig) Nordstrom and Lois (Steven) Erling and their children, David, Paul and Julia and Bill Forelli; sons, Harold (Bonnie) and their children Andrew, Madeleine and Matthew Horton, and Dale (Ethelyn Kaim) and children Jessica and John Honerkamp, Kristin and Carlos, and also two great-grandchildren Sasha and Sophia Honerkamp. Other survivors include four brothers, Vernon (Pauline), Ernest, Keith (Alice) and Loren (Janis); four sisters, Inez (Jim) Fattig, Phoebe (Frank) Martin, Olive (Stanley) Gurney, and Esther (Tom) Harmon; and one sister-in-law, Joyce Lutes.
VISITATION: 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012 from until the 7 p.m. funeral service in Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet, followed with refreshments in the fellowship room. Interment service will be at Maple Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Covenant Park Bible Camp at Park Lake.
