GEORGE S. HERRINGTON

George S. Herrington, 90, of Morgan Park, passed away Jan. 17, 2012 in Diamond Willow Assisted Living.

George was born Aug. 29, 1921 to Rufus and Ada (Browning) Herrington in Agricola, Mississippi. In 1944 he married Marjorie Knox and together they raised six children.

George worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps before entering the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Navy, where he served as a cook on a sub chaser. Most of his working years in Duluth were spent with the Duluth Winnepeg and Pacific Railway. He was a three time Commander of the West Duluth American Legion, Post 71 and an honorary lifetime member. He was active in the West Duluth Moose as well as with the United Protestant Church of Morgan Park.

George was able to participate in the May 2011 Honor Flight Northland to Washington D.C., accompanied by son Gerald and grandson Scott.

George was preceded in death by his parents, and nine siblings.

He is survived by his wife Marjorie, and children, Barbara Herrington of Duluth, Susan (Thomas) Bernard of Duluth, George (Valerie) Herrington Jr. of Esko, Glen (Barbara) Herrington-Hall of St. Paul, Gerald (Pamela) Herrington of Hermantown, and Raymond (Melissa) Herrington of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Gerald (Denise) Sleeman, George (Darcy) Sleeman, Kristin Bernard, Cynthia (Thomas) Lyons, Tina (Brad) Guyer, Scott (Beth)Herrington, Jennifer (Derek) West Trevor Herrington and Derek Herrington; great grandchildren, Garrett and Dylan Sleeman, Casey Sleeman, Morgan Johnson, Emily Garberding, Kaitlin Johnson, Lindsey LaFlair, Kimberly DiLego, Genesis Lyons, Allyson Guyer, Bryan Guyer, Kenna Herrington and Adam West. He is also survived by a sister Vida Hartfield of Irvington, Ala.; nieces, nephews and many friends.

The family would like to thank the staff of Diamond Willow and St. Luke's Hospice for their many kindnesses and great care of George.
