Loreen Carol (Malander) Martin, 74, formerly of Tower, died peacefully in hospice in the Cook Nursing Home Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, one day before her birthday.
Loreen Carol (Malander) Martin, 74, formerly of Tower, died peacefully in hospice in the Cook Nursing Home Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, one day before her birthday.
Loreen was born to Arthur and Lempi Malander Dec. 16, 1936, in Tower. She graduated from Embarrass High School and Duluth Business University.
Loreen married the love of her life, Jim Martin, in June of 1964. They made a home in rural Tower on Loreen’s family homestead, next door to her parents and just down the road from her sister. On Loreen’s 30th birthday, she and Jim welcomed a son, Todd. Loreen spent the rest of her life as a devoted mother, often joking about how she “spoiled” her only child.
Loreen was very active in her church, Gloria Dei Lutheran. She spent many days quilting, making pasties, pies, and prune tarts with her friends. Loreen had a strong work ethic and enjoyed her career in the billing department at Lake Country Power, retiring in 1998. After retirement, Loreen especially enjoyed the country life. She loved her home, was happy being outdoors, and appreciated the beauty of her surroundings on her family homestead. For years Loreen took daily walks along her property with her faithful companion at her side, a springer spaniel named Ryle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James William Martin; her parents; and her brother, Russell.
Loreen is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Todd Martin and Jolene Hyppa Martin of Cook; sister Audrey (Raymond) Niemi of Tower; treasured nieces, nephews, sisters- and brothers-in-law; many life-long friends and neighbors; and her dear friends at the Cook Nursing Home, including Helen and Karen.
Todd and Jolene are grateful to Loreen’s care teams at the Mayo Clinic, Essentia Health, Cook Hospital, East Range Hospice, and especially the staff of the Cook Nursing Home, whose care in combination with Loreen’s faith supported her three-year fight against pancreatic cancer.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, in Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 6959 Hwy 169, Virginia. Pastor Don Stauty will officiate. A luncheon will be held in Loreen’s honor in the church hall following the service. Private interment will be at the Vermilion Lake Township Cemetery at a later date.
