Fred C. Johnson II passed away Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, in his home surrounded by family.
He was born Oct. 9, 1913, in Duluth and was a lifetime resident of this area.
Fred was a World War II Veteran and served in the South Pacific, the Philippines, and Japan during the war. He worked for AO Smith in Milwaukee, US Steel in Duluth, and finally on the Arrowhead Bridge in Superior.
He was an avid gardener and shared all his produce with family and friends. You could always find him either in the garden or garage where he liked to tinker on his car and his other projects.
His first love was his wife, Elsie. This year they celebrated 66 years of marriage. Another of his loves was square dancing. He and Elsie squared danced for many years, and at one time Fred was the oldest square dancer in Minnesota. The club they belonged to would often give demonstrations, and it was always nice to see the two of them all dressed up and going out to have a good time. Like most grandpa’s, he loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He attended many games, concerts, and graduations, and they always put a smile on his face. Fred also was a very good cook, and when the holidays came around, he would make some fantastic meals that the whole family enjoyed. He was dearly loved, and we will miss him.
Fred was an active member of the Trinity Methodist Church and later Faith United Methodist Church. For many years he was one of the main cooks for their annual spaghetti supper and later helped with the community dinners.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred C. Johnson Sr. and Mary Koski Johnson; two sisters, Adele Steffens and Ethel Sutton; and four brothers, Bill, Edwin, Lionel and John.
Fred is survived by his wife, Elsie Thompson Johnson of Superior; son Fred C. (Tina) Johnson III of Plover Wis.; daughter Linda (Michael) Salus of Superior; seven grandchildren, Matthew (Vickey), Michelle (Shaun), Fred, Lila (David), Mikel, Mina, and Andrew; and three great-grandchildren, Collin, Jaiden and Brookelyn.
VISITATION: 10:30 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Tuesday, Jan. 11, in Faith United Methodist Church, 1531 Hughitt Ave., Superior. Services entrusted to the Cremation Society of Minnesota, (218) 624-5200.
