Clarence Olaf "Click" Kolquist, 92, a lifelong resident of Duluth passed away Sunday, Aug.

Clarence Olaf "Click" Kolquist, 92, a lifelong resident of Duluth passed away Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, at Viewcrest Health Center.

He was born Aug. 7, 1917 in Duluth, at home on Garfield Avenue, the second of 10 children of Thure Bror-Eric Kolquist and Esther Christina Tallquist Kolquist.

He was in the first Confirmation class at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in 1931, in Duluth Heights and graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1935. Following that, he served as a teller at a Duluth bank.

He married Ruth Adeline Benson in October, 1942 in Duluth. He had one son, Robert Clare Kolquist, born January 1947.

During World War II, Clarence served in the Army with the 6th Replacement Depot in the Pacific theater as an administrative clerk. He ultimately achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant. Following the war, he worked for the US Postal Service as a mail clerk on mail trains. For a short time, he also served as a clerk for the mail service in Aberdeen, SD and finally as a Rural Mail Carrier based out of Saginaw, MN until his retirement in 1972.

He married for the second time in 1984 to Gertrude Holmberg Doherty. He was preceded in death by Ruth in 1983 and Gertrude in 2006.

He is survived by son, Robert (Sandy) Kolquist, Abilene, Texas; step-sons, Hugh (Sharon) Doherty of Edmund, Okla., Dennis Doherty of Duluth, Steven Doherty of Duluth, Scott (Teresa) Doherty of Victoria, Minn.; and step-daughter, Cheryl (David Hahn) Doherty of Thomasville, Ga.; brothers, Wallace (Carol), Clifford (Audrey), Donald (Pat), of Duluth and Roger (Barb) of Superior; one sister, Alice Engdahl of Duluth and sisters-in-law, Dawn Kolquist of Superior and Pat Kolquist of Duluth; 10 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Kenneth and Roy and sister Anna Marie.

He was a quiet, kind and giving man. He was respected by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, in Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Memorials can be sent to Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery, Funeral Home.
