Richard Schantz-Hansen, 78, of rural Carlton, finished his "life marathon" on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 from malignant melanoma.
"Schantz" was born Oct. 29, 1930 in Cloquet to Dr. Thorvald and Marion (Davis) Schantz-Hansen.
He graduated from Cloquet High School in 1948, attended Grinnell College, Grinnell Iowa, 1949-1951 and graduated with a B.S. degree in Forest Management from the University of Minnesota in 1953.
He served in the Army during the Korean War from 1953-1955, performing ski patrol and field artillery on the German border at Berchtesgaden.
"Schantz" was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Helsinki from 1958-1959 and spent his entire career working for Northwest Paper/Potlatch as a forester in Park Rapids, Isabella and Cloquet. He retired in 1989, making more time for his Christmas tree farm, gardens and fruit/berry growing operations as well as his other pleasures which included traveling, fishing, skiing, biking and enjoying fine food and wine. He was a commercial pilot and completed many ski and roller blade events.
On Sept. 12, 1995 he married Eileen Keuhn Frisell in Zermatt, Switzerland.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Donald (1989); and infant son, Jan Richard (1960).
"Schantz" is survived by his wife, Eileen; her children, Annette (Tim) Riley, Duluth and Todd (Carol) Frisell, Ireland; his father-in-law, Ken Keuhn, Carlton; Eileen's sisters, Patsy (Pat) Norha and Robin (Mark) Braaten; brothers, Bill (Carolyn Pegalow) Keuhn and Mike Keuhn; and Juraj Smolej, their AFS student from Slovakia 1999-2000.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Hieb, Dr. Creagan, Dr. Lalich and St. Mary's Hospice staff and doctors for their love and care.
GATHERING OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS: 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 10, at their home at 2140 Gillogly Road, Carlton.
