Joy Giblin passed away on Monday, March 2, 2009, at her home.
She was born the last of five children to Dr. C.B.Lenont and Estelle Shaw on March 18, 1916, in Virginia.
Joy was a longtime Virginia resident and the last survivor of the well known "Lenont sisters". The Lenont home, located on the corner of 5th Avenue and 1st Street North, was Joy's childhood home.
She graduated from the Virginia High School in 1933 and the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City. She also attended Virginia Junior College and the University of Minnesota.
The 3rd floor ballroom at the Lenont Home was the site of her wedding to James Giblin, Sr. of Eveleth, on Sept. 28, 1940, in a gala affair. During World War II Joy was employed in Chicago at the Museum of Science and Industry, while her husband taught aircraft ID for the Navy. Following the war and upon Jim's graduation from the U of M School of Law, they moved to Mankato. They returned to Virginia in 1946. There Jim began his sole law practice spanning over 50 years. During this time Joy was "the best legal secretary I ever had" according to Jim.
Many of Joy's winters were spent in Borrego Springs, Calif., along with her sisters, Bernice and Marguerite. Joy's later years were spent with her significant friend and companion Orin Tramz. All of her summers were spent at the "Eshquaguma Cabin" purchased in 1948. Joy enjoyed curling, golfing and spending time with her sisters. Of course, the love of her life were her three children.
Joy affectionately touched the lives of all who knew her. She was a kind and caring lady with an uncanny ability of being "a good listener". A special thank you goes to her caregivers. She was a member of Eshquaguma Country Club, Virginia-Lenont Curling Club, and was active in community affairs and projects.
Joy was preceded in death by her husband Jim in 1990, her siblings: Marguerite "Gidge" McNeil, Bernice Adams Tinker "Niecy", Stanley Lenont "Tatter" and "Little" Charles Lenont; her companion Orin Tramz in 2007, and Joy's parents.
Joy is survived by her son, James C. (Mick) Giblin, Jr. (Kathy Nelson) of Lake Eshquaguma, Gilbert; daughters, Mary Joy Lenont (Jim Laine) of Eagles Nest, Ely, Minn., and Katie Giblin (Mark Mitchell) of Cedar Island Lake, Biwabik and Duluth. She will be sadly missed by her three children who dearly loved her. God bless her! Other special survivors include niece, Cathy "O" Seaquist of Duluth; nephews, Charles B. McNeil of Lake Eshquaguma, David Adams of Maple Grove, Minn., Stephen Adams of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and sisters-in-law, Margaret Essling of St. Paul, and Jane Lord of Danville, Calif.; along with many other great nieces and nephews (17). Joy enjoyed her special grandchild "the little man", Ian Hutkowski; and Chad, Amy and Holly.
SERVICE: 6 p.m. Friday in the Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia with Rev. Bridget Strudwick officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Eshquaguma Country Club or the Virginia Historical Society.
