George H. Peterson

I would like to thank George H. Peterson for his many years of service in the United States Navy. George entered the U.S. Naval Reserve on Jan. 9, 1933, and was called to active duty on Oct. 11, 1940, where he was assigned to the Quincy, a heavy cruiser. On May 14, 1942, he was reassigned to a destroyer, the USS O’Bannon. The Quincy was sunk one month later. He remained on the O’Bannon until the end of World War II. During this time the O’Bannon was involved in many major engagements in the Pacific Theater. George stayed in the reserves and was called up to active duty again in the Korean War and was stationed on the Henderson, a destroyer.

He remained in the reserves until March 1964 when he was honorably discharged from the Navy. George had served 31 years. I honor my father for his many years of military service. George passed away in 1985, but if he were still with us, he would be 100 years old this year.
