Robb Franz joined the Navy in 1957. He served as an airman weatherman (aerographer) with a P2V Patrol Bomber Squadron in Lincoln, Neb. In 1962 he transferred to the Air Force and took a commission as an officer. He then became a missile launch officer for a Minute Man ICBM (inter-continental ballistic missile) Squadron at Whiteman Air Force base in Missouri for five years.
