My father, Harold Jarvinen, served in the U.S. Army from 1943-45. He was a tech sergeant in the 10th Armored (Tiger) Division and was assigned to Headquarters Company, CCA of the 10th. The division was part of Gen. Patton’s 3rd Army. Units of the 10th Armored Division were instrumental in the defense and relief of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. He entered France at LaHarve in fall 1944, went all the way through France and Germany and ended the war in Garmish, Germany, in 1945, after the Germans had surrendered. He was awarded the CIB badge and the Bronze Star.
Dad was born in Maple, and worked for U.S. Steel for 30 years while raising a family in Duluth. His parents, Harold and Roberta, live in Spring Hill, Fla.
