Deer stand with shooting lanes

An aerial photograph shows a deer stand built on county forestland with several shooting lanes — trees cut through the woods — reaching out like spokes on a wheel. County officials say some shooting lanes are 30 feet wide and as much as 700 feet long and that hundreds of acres of forest are being permanently affected. In one case, a group of hunters cleared more than six acres of forest for shooting lanes. (St. Louis County Department of Lands and Mines photo)
