Cathy Beaver, a member of the Kanteleen Soittajat ensemble which performed along with the Jarvenpaa Singers before the book signing event, holds up her kantele, the Finnish national instrument which has been played in Finland for more than 2,000 years. The first kantele was made of five strings. Now, they are made with up to 41 strings. Beaver is holding up an 11-string instrument. A form of a lap harp, the instrument can be played from the lap, upright against the body, strapped on like a guitar, or placed upon a table. (Thomas Vaughn)
