The image shown above was used as a postcard invitation mailed out for this year’s Baeumler Kaplan Holocaust Commemoration series at UMD. The left half is from the painting “The Concordat” by Fritz Hirschberger, which shows a faceless bishop and a Nazi officer standing on a Holocaust victim. The right half shows Pope Pius XII above a death camp crematorium. Local Catholics have objected to the postcard and the theme of the corresponding play, “The Deputy.”
