My father, Robert Delich, passed away in 2004 and I found some photos and this note written with it.
“Winter was fast approaching. God, I couldn’t wait. I truly loved to skate. And this year the first-ever organized hockey teams for our end of town were being put together, I was so excited. The snow and cold came. The man who was to coach the team was a great choice. Bob Watt, a very knowledgeable and patient person began tryouts. The team was selected. There were kids from Morgan Park, Gary New Duluth, and a few from Riverside. Yes! I made the team and so did my brother Mike. We had practice 3-4 times a week. I made second line wing. Way back in the 1950s very few players had much equipment, such as helmets, gloves, pads and even sticks. Coach Bob bought from his own pocket a stick for a lot of us. He would drive almost the whole team to each game. Our first two years in the program we won the city championship. This meant we got to play in the Curling Club. By today’s standards, this behemoth of architecture would not be a big deal, but in the 50s, it was an honor.” Robert Delich
I’ve attached a photo of the team. My father is in the second row, seventh person. My uncle, Mike Delich, is the third person in the second row.
