This photo shows American Indian children when they first arrived at boarding school. “Boarding schools were a major loss of Indian language,” said Susan Anderson. “One lasting consequence of the boarding school experience has been an upsurge in child neglect and a cycle of removal of successive generations of Indian children from their parents.” Col. Richard Pratt used these before-and-after photographs to raise money and institutional support for the Carlisle Indian Industrial School.
