"Mirrors of the Self"

Chalkboard photos are a big part of the University Avenue Project. “I approached hundreds of people in various situations, asking them questions about identity and race, or even about their favorite word,” photographer Wing Young Huie explained in the project’s accompanying book. “I asked the participants to write one of their answers (chosen by me) in chalk, turning the simple boards into black-and-white mirrors of the self. Like messages in a bottle, the words bubbled up, bringing to the surface a wealth of emotions and needs, prosaic and philosophical wishes, private and public fears.” Image courtesy of the artist
