How to prepare financially for adopting a pet
I'm a dog person and I treat my pets like family. I'll be the first to tell you that adding a new member to the family is a huge decision. When you adopt a pet you are committing to care for your pets...

Smell of the river

Reader’s view: Keep cats inside or on a leash — it’s the law
Duluth’s leash law applies to cats as well as dogs. This law states domestic house cats must not roam free and must have a valid license and vaccinations. If outdoors, cats must be on a leash and be attended to for their safety.

Reader’s view: Dogs don’t belong in crates when you’re gone
I’ve just got to say that I was quite bothered with the Aug. 14 “Pets of the Week” feature in the News Tribune, in which it was stated that “Maddox” was used to staying in a crate when his people weren’t home. It was written as if this was a great quality for this dog to have.

Reader's view: Fostering dogs helps animals and humans
I am addicted to fostering dogs. Here’s why.
Fostering is free. Completely. The rescue through which you foster pays all medical, food and unforeseen costs of the dog.

Reader's view: Get your pets fixed or don’t have pets at all
To the irresponsible people in upper Woodland who didn’t get their cat spayed: Your little black kitten was found in a culvert, extremely afraid and hungry, probably only 3 to 4 weeks old. Shame on you! If you can’t get your animals fixed, for heaven’s sake don’t have any! I am sure there probably are siblings out there that haven’t been found.

Reader's view: Volunteers, donors brought success to Paws for Love
For four years, I attended the Paws for Love dinner and silent auction, a fundraiser for the Humane Society of Douglas County. I enjoyed the event with friends, supporters and community members. This year I joined the volunteer committee that met in December and every other week through April, planning every detail. Working with a group of caring people all committed to the welfare of homeless animals in our community, with a common goal of making this event a success, was worthwhile.

Reader's view: Please don’t feed dogs without owner’s permission
I made a quick stop at Cub Foods the week of March 7. I had my dog in the vehicle with the window ajar slightly. I was in the store for about 15 minutes, and when I came back to my truck I noticed a small rawhide treat shoved into the very small opening of the window. Someone put the rawhide treat in an awkward position that was furthest from my dog in the back seat. You could tell my dog did try to reach the rawhide treat but failed. This probably put my dog in an angle to potentially be in harm. And what if my dog would have choked trying to swallow the rawhide with no one there to help her? I personally do not give my dog rawhide bones.

Pet adoptions new to home show this year
Visitors to the Arrowhead Home and Builders Show can bring home new weatherproof siding or a new type of flooring, but they could also bring home a new pet. Seven area animal shelters will have about 500 dogs and cats available over the course of the show.
