The new library and media center at Denfeld High School is being built so that it juts out a bit from the rest of the building, so that it’s surrounded by ample parking and so that it can be seen and easily accessed from busy Grand Avenue.
Board member Ann Wasson made the motion to accept a student transition team’s first choice: for Denfeld and East names, colors and mascots to remain the same, while Central’s name and mascot are retired.
East High School has fewer low-income students and students of color than Central and Denfeld. When Central closes, the new eastern high school will receive a relative influx of diversity in the form of students from the central corridor.
The architects working on the projects will use the schematic designs as a foundation to guide the development of construction drawings for the new western middle school and Lincoln/Piedmont Elementary School.
It’s taken nearly four years to develop and implement the long-range facilities plan, and work goes on every day involving the design and bidding processes, and construction at several more schools, including Denfeld and Ordean.
