Once Shawn Pierce takes on a mission, he’s not easily deterred. A 16-year-old from Duluth’s Kenwood neighborhood working toward the rank of Eagle Scout, Pierce set out to build a picnic shelter more than a year ago.
If Duluth city planner Steven Robertson wanted a poster child for the city’s recent efforts to foster what it calls “mixed-use neighborhoods,” a project approved Tuesday night by the Planning Commission could be it.
Five years ago Duluth’s parks department announced it was considering removing the historic Chester Park ski jumps and surrounding facilities. In a commentary for the News Tribune, I called for the city to not be too hasty in its decisions. Others wrote letters and still more showed up to a meeting of the parks board. Duluth’s Jim A. Denney, along with his son and Olympic ski jumper Jim J. Denney, proposed a plan to save the jumps. The parks board passed it unanimously.
