I’ve spent about two months every summer for 81 years at my family cabin on the South Kawishiwi River near Ely, not far from a cabin owned by John Chelesnik, the writer of one of two recent commentaries for the News Tribune Opinion page about the changing economy in the Ely area.
Ely junior Louis Gerzin threw a no-hitter, struck out 11 and allowed just one walk in a 10-0 win in six innings over Littlefork-Big Falls on Friday in Ely. Gerzin also had two hits and drove in three runs. The Timberwolves, who also topped Northeast Range 15-2 in five innings, are 6-2.
Just down the road from the offices of the Twin Metals copper mining company, a group of Ely business people are about to open a new “action center” on the city’s main street aimed at persuading those who drop in to take action against copper mining.
The environmental group American Rivers has placed Minnesota’s South Kawishiwi River and the Boundary Waters lakes it flows into on the group’s annual list of “most endangered rivers” because of the potential threat from copper mining.
Friends and foes of proposed copper-nickel mining operations in Northeastern Minnesota will come together for a panel discussion next week sponsored by the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Center for Ethics and Public Policy.
Linda Nervick spotted the bobcat Sunday afternoon driving the back roads to Duluth from Ely. She got out of her car with the intent to photograph what she thought was a lynx. She soon realized she had much more on her hands than a rare brush with a wild animal.
