Hard to believe Duluth hasn’t long had a Public Utilities Commission. A body loaded with experts that could spend the time necessary to weed through information and reach informed, intelligent conclusions could be of great benefit to taxpaying residents. As long as its ultimate authority remained with the city leaders we residents elected to represent us.
The larger issue wasn’t whether the Duluth school district should be allowed to cast an inspirational quote into an exterior wall at its new East High School. More urgent and critical was that the city’s sign ordinance was silent on such inscriptions, providing no distinction between them and other types of outdoor signage.
The management and operation of the city of Duluth’s public utilities (water, natural gas and sanitary sewer) will soon change. If you own property in Duluth, you will feel the financial impact of this.
The mayor’s case for a tax increase would be more persuasive if it included more of the penny pinching shown in 2008. One recent expenditure that sailed through spent nearly $500,000 to pick the route for a paved path connecting the Munger Trail with Lakewalk.
